A few more Christmas songs this week. Lots of people liked Cheech & Chong's "Santa Claus and his Old Lady". There is a YouTube video for it, which is actually the same audio track I played, but it just has a Cheech and Chong slide show for the video:
Other than that, I played some bollywood, some music from china, some electronic, etc. Merry Christmas to everyone!

play list - 12/13/2007
The best part of the shows in December is being able to play from my El Vez "sno-way Jose" Christmas CD. El Vez is a genius. Here's the non-Christmas version of "En El Barrio"
The Christmas version seamlessly mixes in Silent Night *AND* Champagne Supernova by Oasis. Seriously. Genius.
I also did my first (I think?) live editing out of illegal language today. It was during "The message" by grandmaster flash and the furious five. I had to mute it for a few seconds to edit out "pissing" and "fag-hag", which might not have been violations anyway, but I figured it wasn't worth taking a chance.
Today's tracks, including a block from 3 fabric live CD's....

Play list - 12/06/2007 - After Youth Peace Empowerment
This past Saturday I DJ'ed at the Youth Peace Empowerment event. The bad news is that there was hardly anyone there. But the good news is that we still had a good time. My girlfriend and my brother and his girlfriend were there dancing, and some other people. And DJ Skratch E from KKFI's Wednesday night electronic show was there to DJ right after me. And we had some cool MC's who occasionally rocked the mic while the music was playing. it was fun to hear them freestyling to daft punk.
My favorite song of the night was probably Jogi by Panjabi MC. I don't know why I have not been playing this song on the air before!! I guess because its foreign hip-hop, which makes me a little afraid of bad lyrics. But today I decided it should be fine. Here's the awesome video:

Play list - 11/29/2007
So my brother sent me a link to this Daft Punk home music video for Harder Better Faster Stronger. Its very cool.
Daft Bodies - Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger
It turns out there are a LOT of home videos for this song. Someone does the same thing as the bodies one above, except just using their hands. I'm not sure which video came first. Then there's the dancing girl below, and then there is an accapella version. And then Kanye West sampled it for his Stronger song. Seems this song has been the source of much creativity. Daft Punk rocks! And this is an old album, I'm surprised I haven't heard more about their more recent Human After All album because it is excellent.
One funny thing that happened today was that I played a "modern disco" set that caused some negative feedback. I think it was specifically the song "From Disco To Disco" that people hated. One person called in and said "I don't know what you call this but it ain't music", then hung up. and the station manager said the sound in the song sounded like someone choking a duck, LOL. It does actually sound something like that, its very cool.

Play list - 11/22/2007 - Thanksgiving
Wow, its quite a bit different doing a show on a holiday. there's nobody at the studio except me, and not many people on the streets outside. when nobody is calling, it makes you wonder if anyone is really listening. makes me sympathize with the programmers who have late night / overnight shows. but eventually some people called in to say happy thanksgiving, so that was nice. happy thanksgiving to everyone!
I played Rock It today. Here's a cool live video. Not the original Grandmaster DST on the turntable, but the replacement scratcher is great.
And since I'm posting scratch videos... check out this duo:

Play list - 11/15/2007 - Journey With Barbara Jordan
Kathleen and I went to the play "Journey with Barbara Jordan" on Saturday. It was a very good story, she was an impressive woman. So I asked the star/co-writer of the play if she wanted to do an interview, and she did. And the director was part of the interview too. We did it over the phone last night and recorded it and it turned out well. It was a bummer that there were only about 20 people at the show when we saw it, so hopefully the interview will help get some more people to see it. That's why I played Shirley Temple today, because Barbara Jordan loved her.
Besides that, I played the song from Rushmore that's in the second half of this clip:

play list - 11/08/2007
A fun part of today was playing a song by a reggae band from Santa Barbara that my friend Greg Brower and I used to listen to back when we went to UCSB. They were called Crucial DBC. Check 'em out on MySpace.
Play list is below, but on a completely unrelated note, a friend of mine from Oxnard, CA built this sweet model and diorama:

Here's his build log
AND...here is a skateboarding robot:

play list - 11/01/2007
Last night was Halloween. We usually go trick-or-treating with my niece. But this year we just set up a "haunted house". My brother had a voice processor that made his voice sound like a monster, so he set up his speaker outside and scared kids while I walked around the hard in a gorilla costume :-) Pretty fun time.
I also spent a fair amount of time on facebook this week, particularly on the iLike music application. I just joined. I'll probably tire of it soon, but its fun now.
No particular theme today. Here's the video for Manu Chao's Mr. bobby. I'd love to play more of his music, but many songs are in Spanish and I'm not confident that there wouldn't be bad language. bummer.
Thanks for listening and reading!

The song I was most excited to play was the one I opened with, by Bole 2 Harlem. Here's a short video of them performing it at the Ethiopian Music Awards:

Play list - 10/18/2007 - Dalai Lama + Branson
Two themes for today's show.
First, yesterday the dalai lama received the congressional gold medal. i didn't find any audio posted last night of the speech he gave, so i played part of an old speech of his from central park, NY, in 1999. I didn't find a great video of his acceptance speech either, but here is an interesting clip from Australia about his policy on China.
The other theme was my trip to Branson, MO this weekend. Branson is all about shows, kinda like Las Vegas without the gambling. The majority of shows are country/western themed, and I was skeptical of finding any good shows. But we saw four GREAT shows:
-- Liverpool Legends (tribute to The Beatles)
-- Mark Twain tribute breakfast show
-- New Shanghai Circus (Chinese acrobats)
-- Jackson Cash (tribute to Johnny Cash)
Liverpool Legends and Jackson Cash were such good tribute groups! They looked and sounded very like the originals. Of course they're NOT the originals, but they were good enough that it was a blast to see them. I recommend all of those shows. Here's a video of the Liverpool Legends:

Play list - 10/11/2007
For starters, I did not end up seeing Peelander-Z last week :-( I ended up with a bad headache by late afternoon and the show was in Lawrence, 45 minutes away. I think I was asleep before the concert would have event started, LOL
Today I got to play 2 human beatbox songs, that was fun. And I played some old Van Halen in honor of the fact that they are coming to town. And some Abba in honor of the fact that Mamma Mia is in town (and I saw it and it was good!). Madonna's "Hung up" samples "gimme gimme gimme" so i played both of those. here's the video fo the week: madonna's "hung up"! This sweet video also has "crumper" Miss Prissy as featured in the move Rize!

Good day today! No mistakes, and I got several calls. I even got a caller who told me that I did a great job covering for a show on Sunday and it made him listen to mine and tell some friends! AND I got a week-after pledge from my friend Rich in Oxnard, CA!
Tomorrow night I'm going to see these guys in concert in Lawrence, Peelander-Z:

Check out this video on AtomFilms (might as well link to somewhere besides YouTube for once)

Play list - 09/27/2007 - Fall Fund Drive
Whew! My fund drive show is over! I was stressing about it, couldn't get to sleep, woke up early, now I'm exhausted. But it went well! Thanks so much to all my friends and everyone else who called in to donate! I think the station as a whole isn't doing great, which is a bummer. but for now, i'm just glad mine is done!
I couldn't find a video to go with today's songs, so I'm going to embed a video I made about Instant Runoff Voting. Not quite as exciting, but important:

I couldn't find a video to go with today's songs, so I'm going to embed a video I made about Instant Runoff Voting. Not quite as exciting, but important:
And here were my fund drive songs!

Play list - 09/20/2007
My worst...show...ever. Not necessarily the music that was played, but at least from the chaos and technical perspective. One of the mics is not working, which is a pretty big deal since we only have 3 and many shows have more than one guest. And particularly because our pledge drive starts tomorrow and we often have multiple people pitching at a time. So they really wanted to get the mic fixed today, and the electrician just happened to show up right before my show started. So this was the 2nd time I did my show while the electrician was working on the mixing board at the same time, opening and closing the door while I'm on the mic, and even trying to mouth something to me while I'm on the mic, LOL! And I'm having to do tests of the broken mic while on air, so that when it doesn't work (which it didn't) there is just dead air. So lots of dead air today while testing the dead mic. Hopefully we'll get the backup studio working so that we don't have to be working on things while on the air.
Okay, enough whining. here's the video of the day. Its a great one!
And here's today's play list!

Play list - 09/13/2007
i learned how to do something new at the station today. i changed some of the bulbs on the mixing board for the lights that tell you what inputs are active. it definitely helps when the lights are working for that! Of course, in the proecss, i left one CD player in the "off" mode, so when i tried to use it, nothing happened. and i also didn't turn down the turntable volume after the song i played off of a record so the next song on the record accidentally started up. so a couple small mistakes today.

Playlist - 09/06/2007
Today was essentially my one year anniversary show! (just a day less). Thanks to Kathleen for pointing that out :-) I thought I played a pretty good show in honor of that. Hardly any phone calls though :-(
I started off with some hip-hop today. Inexplicably, when I was announcing Jurassic 5 I said "Jurassic Park", LOL.
Then I played some more Flight of the Conchords:

Play list - 08/23/2007 - Amoeba music
The ethnic festival was great last weekend! I ate:
-- curry puffs from Malaysia
-- tofu rice pocket, rice ball, and edamame from Japan
-- shave ice from hawaii
-- hummus from israel
-- banana sticky rice from thailand
and we handed out lots of flyers about the station's world music
i was very excited for two things today.
1) Got to play flight of the conchords. Please watch the hilarious video of the song i'd really like to play, but don't think will be appropriate:
2) Got to play a lot of my music from my trip to amoeba music in hollywood 2 weeks ago
we also started using special software at the station to log playlists. so now my playlists will be exported from there. not super pretty but more info. here it is!

Play list - 08/16/2007 - Ethnic Festival
The Ethnic Festival is this weekend, so i got to do an interview with a couple of the organizers. I'm also going to sit at the KKFI table there all Sunday afternoon.
Besides the interview, I was excited to play the first two tracks from the new Chemical Brothers CD. They're pretty sweet. But they made a guy call in who said they were "nerve wracking" and that he wanted me to play something "pretty", LOL.
Here's also a new video from the Chemical Brothers CD. I like this song, but it isn't clean for the air, so this is as close as I'll come to playing it.

Muhammad Ali Cartoon
I'm going to try to attach a picture or video with each play list now, so I considering going back to modify some old posts, but I'm just giong to add them going forward.
In the meantime, looking for old Cassus Clay videos, I found this sweet cartoon starring Muhammad Ali. From the days he was marketing himself everywhere and every way, I guess.

it was another day of sending out bad song information, lol. for my cover song, i picked the aquamarines doing apache. i thought the original was by incredible bongo band in 1972 or so, but they weren't the first to do it either. bill at the station came in and said he thought it was jorgen ingmann in the late 60's. someone else called in and said they remembered jorgen ingmann's version. so i announced that i was wrong and that it was jorgen ingmann's song. of course, that was wrong too. bill looked it up, and it was originally by the shadows in 1960. aaaargh. but as my friend dickie said, at least it shows that people are listening and paying attention :-) Check out all these versions of Apache and read more about it
And here's an album cover of the original artists:

Last weekend I DJ'ed outside in Westport with Bill O Connor, the Thursday Morning Buzz DJ. He does it weekly with another guy who has equipment, but that person was busy, so I brought my equipment. It was fun, I played some funk, some Motown kind of stuff, and some electronic. The bad part is that the hours were 11 pm to 2 am. So I didn't get to bed until almost 3:00 which is WAY late for me (I'm such a wimp). And I still wake up at 9:00. I was still wiped out on Monday, took me 3 days to recover, LOL. But it was fun.
A couple of CD skips this week, that was a bummer. But otherwise good show.

Wow, what a crazy time in the studio today. An electrician volunteered to fix a grounding problem with the turntable. We told him that between 8am to 10am was good working time because we run long syndicated shows without interruption. So he started at 9:00. Around 9:40 we started saying "Okay, only 20 more minutes until we have to go on air." But we weren't done, so he just kept working. And Richard (our manager) and Mike were helping him too, and I moved all the chairs out to make space, so I did almost the whole show standing up with 2-3 other people walking in and out of the studio around me. And the whole show the mixing board had its lid off and the electrician was removing wires and probing connections, LOL. At one point he asked if he could just short something real quick as a test, which would make the music cut out momentarily. I told him I didn't think that was a good idea.
After all that I was pretty amazed that I only made one mistake, and ironically it was after he'd already left. I started playing the wrong track on a CD, and I wasn't sure if the track was clean, so I had to fade it out after about a minute and then just go to the one I wanted. Not too bad though.
another funny thing that happened is mike told me at 11:35 that i could give two concert tickets away. it seemed a little late in the show since i hadn't mentioned it at all, but i announced it, a woman called in right away, and she was there to get them before the show ended at 12:00. start to end, quickest ticket giveaway ever (for me).

I spent several hours over the past could weeks trying to fix two of our broken CD players at the station. I was able to get one of the two fixed by replacing some broken parts in it with parts from the other one. So I brought that one back in today and it worked for the whole show, so that was good news!
I played some Bollywood music today and saw a Bollywood movie this weekend. It was called "kuch kuch hota hai" (i think) and was very funny. It can be checked out at the Plaza library, I highly recommend it if you like Bollywood music.

play list - 06/21/2007 - MC Hammer
Earlier in the week, I got an email highlighting the new video by MC Hammer called "Bring our brothers home." I thought I'd play it on the show, but I couldn't find it for download on iTunes or anywhere. So here it is:
Definitely not an anti-Bush song, but still a pretty bold video. And here's a discussion of it on AlterNet.
So instead, I played some MC Hammer substitute songs and some Public Enemy to at least get some other good political rap in.
10:00

Play list - 06/14/2007
Last night we had a station meeting about relocating our tower and transmission equipment. We're considering a location that would be a HUGE improvement over our current one. Our equipment would be in a room in a building instead of in a beat-up trailer on a vacant lot. So that would be great, but also scary, because it would take a lot more money in rent, but would also have many money-saving advantages, like less maintenance. So lots of exciting stuff happening at the station right now.
On to the show.....I played a lot of Latin and Latin remixes today.

Playlist - 06/07/2007 - Short songs
I was going to do a quick set of short songs last week, but didn't get to it. So then i was going to do it this week, and decided last night that i could make a whole show of short songs. i decided that my cuttoff for short songs was 3:00. I think most regular radio singles these days are 3:30 to 4:30 long. So there was no song on today's show longer than 3:00. i'll list the times for some. 44 songs total! whew, i'm afraid i gave our already tired cd players a bit of a workout

My highlight today was playing a track from the Jane Fonda Workout Record. I just got it and thought it was hilarious and the first song is the Jackons - Can You Feel It. Great song plus funny over-dub of Jane Fonda, I couldn't resist. I was afraid it might irritate people and I'd get complaints, but I think everyone else thought it was funny too. Just now i was searching the internet for an image of the album cover, and found this picture, which is actually a scrapbook that someone made from the album cover, LOL. Nice. And thanks to nilufar for letting me know about jane fonda's recent award:
"The 60th Cannes film festival, which wrapped up Sunday, awarded a Palme d'Or for lifetime achievement to veteran US actress and activist Jane Fonda over the weekend. The exceptional Golden Palm prize, awarded by festival chief Gilles Jacob, had only been awarded three times before since 1946, to French directors Alain Resnais and Gerard Oury and the French actress Jeanne Moreau."
I decided that after playing the Jacksons, some more 70's R&B would be good.

Playlist - 05/24/2007 - JFK + Nature Sounds
Whoops, I can't believe I forgot for four days to put in my play list. I played some JFK speeches in honor of his birthday coming up this week. I didn't know what year he was born, but Bruno called to tell me JFK was born in 1917, died in 1963 at 46 years old. So he would've been 90 this week.
I also found a nature sounds CD this week, so I had a funny idea (I thought) to mix nature sounds in during the speeches. So it would be like JFK was talking in a forest by a stream, or like you were listening to the speeches in the forest by a stream. I got one email saying it was very annoying, LOL. Sorry.

The English Beat show was great! It's so fun to go to a concert where you know the band's every single song. That doesn't happen for me too often. And they're all great songs. And Dave Wakeling is very cool, I got to say hi to him after the show, which I also don't normally do. So it was a great time!
Today I played some electronic favorites and half of a EuroHit 40. I would've liked to play this funny fake-German song by the Tygorz that my brother sent me a link to, but it seems not quite FCC acceptable. Although he heard it on the radio which made us wonder why they think they can play it and I think we can't. The definition of obscene material is open to the FCC's interpretation, so I guess its just up to each DJ/station to decide how risky they think certain material is. I really didn't need to play it that bad, so definitely not worth the risk for me.
Oh yes, also check out Moby's Body Rock video!

Playlist - 05/10/2007 - Dave Wakeling

Today was one of my favorite shows I've done, and the "Space Show" was one too, so its been a good few weeks. The highlight today was being able to air an interview with Dave Wakeling, lead singer of one of my favorite all-time bands, The English Beat. I've uploaded it as an MP3, so listen to it here!. Dave was a great guy and I really enjoyed talking to him. I can't wait to see English Beat perform at Harrah's tomorrow!
Then I played several English Beat songs and other ska songs. And....I played the song timber, which is a great song, but an even greater video:
Did I mention I've been spending a lot of time on YouTube lately :-)

Big news in the station this week is that we have a new general manager, Richard Pirodsky. He's from New York, and has got lots of radio experience. Since I've been at the station (2+ years), this is our second manager and we've had 3 interim mangers. Hopefully he'll hold the spot for a while.
Today had an 80's theme to it for two reasons.
1) I found vinyl versions this weekend of Herbie Hancock's "Future Shock" with Rockit (check out this article) , and Bob and Doug McKenzie's "Take off".
2) The English Beat is coming to town! I gave away some tickets today and I'll have more next week. I may try to do an interview too, we'll see.

Today was a lot of fun. i got lots of calls and got to play from the new euro hit 40 program CD! (even though it skipped and i had to start it over). On the euro hit 40 CD was this hilarious fun German song called Papa Pinguin by pigolo. The dj on the show talks about dancing penguins, so i looked it up on youtube, and i found the video!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eKG08z85DtY
i was all excited that i'd found this new german music and i showed the video to my 7 year old niece and she said "oh yeah, those are the penguins that sing YMCA in french". sure enough, there is another video, same artist, with a song to the tune of YMCA, but its "I love to ski", in French. so i guess i should be taking music suggestions from my niece from now on, LOL.

Playlist - 03/29/2007 - Spring fund drive
This week is the fund drive. $500 was raised during my show. that's only half of what we got during my show in the fall, so that was disappointing. Seems to be that way for everyone this time, the drive as a whole is way behind last drive. Bummer. I've also been going in to answer phones and pitch with people on their shows. that part is kinda fun, but i'll still be glad when its all over. hopefully we'll at least make enough to last until next drive!
The best part was getting a pledge from a military person, Matt, stationed in Kuwait. Awesome to know someone there is listening! And also from a nice woman in Alabama, who called in to say hi too. And from Kathleen, Patricia, Dave, Mary, Rodena, and more. thanks everyone!
