Play list - 01/29/2012 - Signal to Noise

I covered for Barry Lee last night on his show, Signal to Noise.  It's a challenge to remember how to do everything correctly in the studio when only doing a radio show every few months.  So technically, I think it went smooth enough, considering that.

Played some new music from the kylie minogue live double cd.  it comes with a concert DVD that my wife and i thought was fantastic.  made us wish we had traveled somewhere to see the concert, but I think texas was the closest place.  And of course, if we sat far back, the view wouldn't be as good as on the DVD, so maybe the DVD is actually even better.  Lots of the concert is on YouTube (which surprises me, it looks like you could watch all the concert DVD footage there).  Here's one of the songs I played:

Play list - 09/28/2011 - Morning Buzz

Covered for Mike Murphy this morning on the Morning Buzz.  When I do the 6:00 AM slot I'm always worried that my alarm won't go off or I'll sleep through it and not get there in time.  All was good though, at least until Democracy Now started at 8:00 and I was trying to turn up the wrong channel and missed the first 30 seconds of it.  Whoops.  Got a lot of really nice calls from listeners who said they missed my regular show, that was cool.

Played many of same songs as when I covered Signal to Noise a couple weeks ago.  Figured it was different time slots, different listeners, wouldn't hurt to repeat some.  Snuck in some Bee Gees Night Fever though!!!

Play list - 09/05/2011 - Signal To Noise

it's been 5 months since i last covered a show.  the first few minutes were a little rocky, i stuttered a bit giving the station id, but after that things went smoothly enough.  there also was no air conditioning in the studio so that made things *really* warm.  i didn't want to use the fan since it makes some background noise, but it was tough to do.

i had a couple new cd's to play from, including the latest by ursula 1000, mondo beyondo.  this is an excellent cd with an excellent title track that has a pretty good video too:

Art vs. Science vs. Daft Punk

I posted a while ago that I was enjoying some music by Art vs. Science. They have a new video out that is another great one. They're doing a live version of a song by one of my all-time favorite groups, Daft Punk. With just one person on a set of drums and two others on keyboards and a voice processor, they do a great job of recreating "Harder Better Faster Stronger".

Hopefully this will inspire more electronic musicians to create a live show that isn't just them standing in front of the computer or DJ gear. (Though the big electronic musicians usually add tremendous light/video shows that make up for that)

Play list - 03/20/2011 - Signal To Noise

I got 5 hours of show time in over this past weekend.  18 hours after finishing Retro Redeye Express (a 3 hour show) I covered for Barry Lee on Signal to Noise on Sunday.  At the same time, a Neil Diamond tribute concert was going on at the Record Bar with a few bands each playing a few different Neil Diamond songs.  Pretty sure that show was related to the fact that Neil was inducted into the rock and roll hall of fame last week.  So I decided to join in and start out with some Neil Diamond songs and covers.  Then I went over to the Record Bar and caught the last band at 10pm.  The last band was Free Band Radio, whose bassist is a friend of mine, Eric Gould, so that timing worked out well.

Play list - 03/19/2011 - Retro Redeye Express

Covered for Sunshine on Saturday night.  I thought it would be fun to try doing some live streaming video from the studio.  The sound was pretty bad, so nobody would want to just have the video running instead of streaming audio.  But if you used streaming audio or turned on the radio, the video stream wouldn't be in synch.  Oh well, it was a fun and interesting experiment.  Thanks to the few people who tried tuning into it.

I played some 80's new wave, followed by some ska and reggae, and then some 80's hip hop towards the end too.  Including this classic from hip-hop comedians Kid 'n Play (with a video cameo by their buddies Salt 'n Pepa)

Grandmaster Flash - The Message - Vinyl label mistake

I was flipping through my vinyl albums last night and was surprised to find that I have "The Message" by Grandmaster Flash and the Furious Five. I have a greatest hits CD of theirs (that I foolishly have hardly ever listened to) and a remix of The Message on another album that I listen to a lot and love. But totally forgot I had an LP. It's on the Sugar Hill label, SH 268 from 1982.

So I put it on and was looking at the cover while listening. I discovered that the track list on the album cover lists 4 tracks on side A, but the sticker on side A of the album only lists 3, it doesn't have "Scorpio". The track is on the record, so the sticker is wrong. Sometimes releases that have mistakes become valuable. I searched the Internet and couldn't find any reference to it though, so maybe its no big deal. Add to that the fact that the cover and record are in pretty poor condition, and its probably worth just the few dollars I probably paid for it. But if anyone knows differently, let me know!  Here's the pics.
