play list - 09/10/2009

i started the show today with the EuroHit 40. this is a countdown of the top 40 hits in europe that is put together once a month by radio nederlands. they don't play each song in full, they pick select songs to play in one hour and just list the others. the show reminds me of when i was a kid and used to plan every sunday to listen to casey casem's top 40 countdown and i kept a log book of the top 10 each week (i guess i started as a music geek very early on). i would get so annoyed that i had to listen to the terrible song "sailing" by christopher cross each week when it was near and at number one for so long. and speaking of terrible songs, i usually don't play the whole hour of euro hit 40 because it can be packed with terrible songs from the united states. but this month had only one terrible song (pussycat dolls) and lots of really good ones, so i played the full hour. you can listen to the EuroHit 40 shows and/or download them for free at their web site: http://www.rnw.nl/radio-program-list/2497

finally bought the new cornershop cd this week. first two tracks rock! the rest probably do too, but i haven't had time to listen that far yet. here's the video for the first track. lots of that great indian string instrument (probably sitar, but maybe other) sound that i love, which is why i love cornershop!

i emailed the cornershop web site to see if i might be able to interview tjinder singh. we'll see!

but i was sad to learn today that local artist "bongo" barry bernstein died last week. i just had him on my show 4 months ago along with his daughter and allaudin ottinger. the three played some music from the sufi faith as part of the religions of the world series i was doing. so today i played a recording of the music they played in the studio during that show. here are some great photos of him doing his performances for kids:
