One of my favorite songs this year was "aNYway" by Duck Sauce. They've got a new single out now, "Barbra Streisand", that is also excellent. And the video features some cool guest stars, including Chromeo! This is a catchy one!

"de donde vengo yo" by chocquibtown (from columbia) was one of my favorite songs of the year from the nacional label, and that's saying a lot because they release a lot of good stuff. nacional just sent out an email that this song won a latin grammy for best alternative song. congratulations to them!

play list - 11/18/2010 - last mid-day medley
today was my last day as host of the thursday mid-day medley. although its a bit of a relief to not have to spend the time preparing and doing the show anymore, of course its also sad to be ending it. especially after all the nice comments i got from listeners who told me how much they will miss my show. i'll miss the actual 2 hours of doing the show too. but between preparing the show, coming in early to engineer the previous show, and having to log play lists, all in the middle of a weekday, it just got to be too difficult for me. thanks again to everyone for all the nice comments and good wishes. hopefully i'll keep up the blog with new favorite bands and videos every once in a while. and i plan to cover for people on their shows at the station occasionally too.
so it was fun doing the last show, i had a lot of new music and got a lot of nice phone calls. i played from the euro hit 40, which i'd hardly even had a chance to preview. one of the songs on it i liked quite a bit, a soul version of white stripes "seven nation army" by a french guy, ben l'oncle soul. another good one was a new one by ursula 1000 featuring fred schneider from the b-52s called "hey you!"

i was super excited that one of the promo companies sent a single from the soundtrack for the new "tron: legacy" movie. the soundtrack is completely composed by daft punk! one of my favorite groups. only bad part was that the single is only two minutes long and it isn't their greatest song. but when you combine it with a tron trailer, its pretty awesome! *especially* because daft punk are in the trailer, and hopefully the movie!

2 highlights for me today.
1) played from my new favorite cd, ursula 1000. very cool electrnic old-style funk, a lot like chris joss, who i've been enjoying for many months. they're on the same label in fact
2) last month i listened to an audio book by steve martin (read by him) about his childhood and developing his stand up act. its called "born standing up" and was very good. i remembered that i had a couple of his vinyl records so i played from one that he talks about in the book, called "let's get small". he's a hilarious guy
couldn't find any real good video of steve martin's old stand up act, but on the theme of hilarious guys, here is video for a different one: bobby lee. he will be in kansas city next weekend, so we are GOING!
i'm out of town next week, mike murphy is covering for me. then i have two more shows after that.

today, i had jim zinn sit in with me as a pitch partner on the show. thanks jim! unfortunately, we didn't do much better than winston apple and I did last week, which wasn't very good. hopefully the station will find a show or programmer that does better in that time slot since i'll only be hosting it a couple more months. i've been doing it for four years now and its been a great experience, but i'm ready to give someone else a shot at it and move on to something else. i'll still be volunteering there, and maybe even will cover for people's shows sometimes.

today was the start of the fall 2010 pledge drive. starting day shows have not done well for me money-raising wise, and this one was no exception. winston apple helped me as a pitch partner, so that made it more enjoyable (thanks winston!). hopefully i'll do better next week, as i have in the past.

i've had the song "bed intruder" stuck in my head for 2 days now. i didn't play it on my show because the material is kinda strange. its made from video news footage of a guy reacting to an attempted rape. of course, rape isn't funny, so that's the bad part. but this guy's *reaction* and his threats to the rapist are funny. and when you take that, and put it to music, as these kids from brooklyn did, it becomes quite funny. and congrats to them for getting about 100,000 purchases on itunes and crediting mr. dodson as one of the writers so that they are all making a few thousand dollars from this great song and video.
so on to the show... today was euro hit 40 with katy perry's "califonia gurls" as #1. sweet. and i did the surf music followed by esquivel series again.

whoops, forgot to post my play list yesterday. coincidentally i received two cd's of surf-rock type music in past two weeks from two of the cool labels that send me music at the station. one was by "los straitjackets", a band of guys who wear mexican wrestling masks when they play, often while wearing suits, lol. but they're actually from nashville. that was from yeproc. the other really is a mexican band called "matorral man". that was from nacional records. so i started the show with those two. got into some 80's stuff, some more funk and then electronic. deadmau5 is coming to kc in october, i want to get tickets next week, should be a cool show.
