i got a lot of calls today, so that was cool. a couple people said they liked the arabic world fusion music i started with. after that i got into some funk-inspired world music (or world-inspired funk, whichever you like). and then i played 2 tracks from my new favorite cd of funky instrumentals by chris joss. the cd just came out. no videos yet that i found, but here is a video form a previous cd of his that definitely gives you the idea:

i thought for sure it would be harder to raise money on my second show of the pledge drive, but i actually did a little bit better than last week, so that was a relief. i think we've still got quite a way to go to hit our usual targets by the end of the drive. let's hope it happens.

played some indian, some funk, and some latin today. in the latin part i played the pinkertones from barcelona. i love this video of them playing live in barcelona at a festival. they have a great live show, especially for electronic musicians.

the nacional download cards i've been giving away expire this weekend, so i did one last giveaway and got a few more callers and emails. they all had nice comments too so it was nice to hear those. some days i get almost no calls and its hard to know if anyone is listening, so its good to have occasional days with a lot of calls.

i played some soul/electronic to start, then some reggae and ska, and some indian stuff. speaking of indian music i just found out that six degrees records has a pretty decent free indian sampler available for download on amazon. and there are a whole bunch more good free samplers on amazon if you look in that "customers who bought this item also bought" section.

I had a kind of 3-theme show today. started with mash ups, in reference to the new dj hero game that has a great soundtrack of mash ups. played a few random songs after that. then highlighted some electronic artists that produce songs for madonna and kylie minogue. madonna was also in one of the mash ups, so i ended up playing 4 madonna songs today :-) i guess it turned into a bit of a madonna tribute show. oh well, why not? she's got a lot of great music. ended with a bunch of cover songs, including "hurt" by nine inch nails performed by johnny cash. there is a cool excerpt on wikipedia about how much trent reznor of nine inch nails loved the video for the johnny cash version of his song. so here it is:

got a new "turntables on the hudson" cd and another world fusion one called "the new gold standard" with some good sitar parts, so i focussed on world fusion music today. funny thing... i got both of these cds (and many more very good cd's) as downloads from a promotion company called spectre digital. i was listening to one cd from them this week and noticing that a song was using lyrics that were the name of a different song on the cd. after this happened a couple times, i checked and found that when you download the tracks from the spectre site they are sequenced differently than the track listing on the album art, LOL. so i had already played several songs on air in the past couple weeks and announced the wrong title. the not so funny part is that i had to re-burn several cd's, which was a bit of a hassle. but the music is great, so i'm not complaining.

started out with air's 10th anniversary moon safari again, so i thought i'd play several more electronic songs from the 1997-1999 span. also nacional now has a free cd sampler available through amazon. so i played music from that and gave away a few more of their itunes download cards.

and if you're going to download the free nacional sampler from amazon, you might as well download the free philip glass sampler too. i also played from that.

and i played some gogol bordello and two other bands started by members of gogol bordello. saw gogol bordello in lawrence last month, it was great. no videos for the songs i played today, but this is their most famous one and a great one, and i've apparently never posted it.

kathleen and josh and i went to see har mar superstar last night and also met up with mike mcgrath there, who had won tickets on my show. har mar was apparently very sick with the flu but still did a great show in a small place, the brick. he stripped off a shirt just about every song (about 6 of them) until he was shirtless. then for the last song or two took off his pants and performed in his paul frank briefs with silver shoes on. very hilarious. check out the pictures on the pitch concert review.

so i played one of the few clean har mar songs from the album today, "sunshine". i don't find a video for that one, but here is a song he played last night that is a great example of his good music and hilarious dancing.
