started the show with a short world cup tribute.  some south african music and one song, "intro" on fabric live 07, that is actually old soccer audio commentary set to music.  (world cup side note:  usa win vs. algeria yesterday was awesome, so glad kathleen and i decided to watch it. fifa.com has highlight videos without commentary, but they can't be embedded.)  then i went on to some other mix cds, some reggae/dub, and then some new releases.

i went to streetside records this weekend.  i didn't realize that they had a good separate electronic section with lots of used stuff.  so i had a mini-spree.  i bought 5 or 6 used things, not like the dozens i used to come away with from amoeba records in california.  but that's fine, it was a good selection, and i got some good stuff that i'll be playing the next few weeks.  including one i played today: frequent flyer - kingston jamaica

three things during the show today that were exciting, for me at least.  first, got to play from the new devo album just released this week.  i've always been a big devo fan and all the devo song study videos, including their new "reality" series, have been pretty hilarious.  the new album cover is pretty funny too.

second, this month's euro hit 40 gave a shout out to me and KKFI Kansas City community radio, all the way from the netherlands!  that was fun to hear and a couple of listeners who are euro hit 40 fans called in to say they enjoyed it.  thanks a lot to tim and the euro hit 40 crew!

and third, david sugalski aka the polish ambassador aka ample mammal sent me some of his new music this week, so i was able to play that too.

the new chemical brothers comes out next tuesday.  i've been announcing for weeks that it came out the same day as the devo album, but i was wrong.  unfortunately, it isn't the first time i've given out incorrect information on the air, and it probably won't be the last.  so hopefully i'll be playing the new chemical brothers next week.

i went in at 7am to help bill o' connor pitch and then he stayed to help me pitch for an hour of my show.  unfortunately i still didn't get many pledges though.  hopefully next week will be better, that's how it went last pledge drive.

i listened to music on pandora.com quite a bit in 2006/2007, but then i got out of the habit.  i turned it on again today, and was reminded how good it can be.  they have this algorithm called the "music genome project" that helps pick songs you'll like based on artists and songs that you've said you like. and it tends to do a great job.  they've added advertisement breaks now, but you can't blame them, they have to make money somehow.

you can build multiple "stations" based on different kinds of music that you like and lets you share your stations with others.  some of mine have turned out better than others, but i'm quite happy with my electronic station.  if you've used it before, then you've probably already created one or more stations that you like.  but either way, try mine out if you like electronic music like daft punk, groove armada, etc.  and leave a comment with a link to your station if you have one you like.

devo has a new album coming out june 15th, which i'm pretty excited about.  they've been sarcastically marketing it as a product from "devo inc." that has been developed via focus groups.  they had an online flash application called the "devo song study" that let users pick their favorites from a list of new songs, and the ones that got the most votes made it on the new album.  here's a video of one of their pretend focus groups:

on sunday, my friend josh and i went to see the producer/dj "pretty lights" at liberty hall in lawrence. it was awesome. great music, great light show, great venue. he uses the cool music distribution model of allowing all his music to be downloaded from his site for free/donation. here's a video of him performing in st. louis. its one of the songs i played today. he had a live drummer in lawrence too, but the lights were way better at liberty hall than in the tent in this video.

today was the start of the "big read". for the next 3 weeks, they are playing 30 minute excerpts of reading from a book. so for those weeks, my show is 1.5 hours instead of 2, which is just fine.

since the transmitter was out during my show last week, i re-played almost the exact same show as last week. i hope the people that listened on the internet stream last week didn't mind. but i decided to change a couple songs, and then of course i didn't play the last half hour because of the big read. i'll save that half hour for next week, when i'll also have local artist winston apple in the studio. and then the week after that, i'm *hoping* i'll have interviewed tjinder singh of cornershop and i'll play that recorded interview. i'm supposed to get the call this monday. keep your fingers crossed for me.

well, on april fools day, our station's transmitter was down during my entire show. i still did the show, just in case it came back up, and because we had people listening on the internet stream. but considering how few people are on the stream compared to listening on radios, i think i'll probably just re-run this show in a couple weeks. so the good news is that soon i'll have a week off from preparing a show :-)

and i was pretty excited about the show too because i just got *three* new cd's of mexican artists and music. 1st was rodrigo y gabriela, who are from mexico city. i'm very excited they are coming to kansas city, kathleen and i already have tickets for great seats. second was mariachi el bronx, a los angeles punk band that just recorded a cd of mariachi music in english. kathleen and i and josh and laleh just saw them perform at the riot room and they were great! and 3rd was a new nortec (norteno-techno) cd from nacional records. here's a live video for the rodrigo y gabriela song i played:

play list - 03/25/2010 - Ultra Music Festival artists

today all the music i played (with one exception) was either preformed or remixed by artists performing at the ultra music festival in miami, florida. the festival is over 100 electronic music artists with just a few hip hop acts, like dj qbert. i'd been wanting to do this special show for a few weeks, but actually today was probably the right day to do it because the festival starts tomorrow.

also of note is that i played a few things that can be downloaded for free. the song i started with was the exception to the ultra artits, but it seemed like the perfect opening track for the show, so i had to play it. the track is "rad anthem" and can be downloaded for free on the rad omen site. and you can see the awesome video there too, which is maybe not quite safe for work.

the other free download is the pretty lights ep from the pretty lights web site. he's coming to lawrence, ks in april. i'm looking forward to seeing that.

one artist that i didn't play because i'd never heard of him before i started looking at the ultra site is deadmau5. there was a short video of his 2009 performance and it looked really cool:

whoops, i'm noticing a week later that i never posted my play list to the blog last week. i guess i was distracted last week by the start of the ncaa basketball tournament and a related web site i was working on.

it was my second band auction show. great guests. first was barclay martin. he was a super nice guy, had some great songs, and just worked on the soundtrack for a movie in the philippines. next band was "just a taste of jazz", which i was told meant that they were a funk band with just a taste of jazz. i'd say that was true, they had a good funk sound going. 3 guys -- one on drums, one on keyboards, and one on saxophone. i liked them so much that i opened up the bidding, but after a couple back and forth rounds with someone, i let it go. was a good time though.

fairly stressful start to the show today. had 2 bands on the show for the band auction. the first band was a rap group called "blunt rap". they said they edited their tracks for language, but in my opinion it was not sufficient. some of the edited words were barely edited and they left in lots of stuff that should've been edited out. so the first half hour of the show involved a whole lot of live editing using the volume slider and hitting delete on the seven second delay. second band was much easier, just a mellow rock and blues band. so that left me with an hour to play music.

started with a columbian hip-hop-electro band whose stuff i'm liking quite a bit, but keep getting confused which is the band name and which is the album name. i hope i announced it right on the air. this isn't the song i played, but it gives you the idea. i think i'll play this one next week.

the new groove armada album came out this week! i was excited to get it and was looking forward to playing it on the show... until i listened to it. its okay, but definitely different than what they've done before. and in my opinion, not as good. i did find an interview with them that confirmed that:

the band has taken their songwriting in an unexpected and original direction. "We could've knocked out an album of reggae-influenced house bangers and a couple of chill-out tunes, and that would've been a much easier life," explains Andy. "But we needed a new challenge. Neither of us was interested in just repeating ourselves."
