kathleen guest dj'd with me on the show today. she had lots of her family listening so she did some dedications - man in black, give peace a chance, we're in the money, white christmas, and fly me to the moon. we also mixed in several electronic songs we both like, and i played two tracks each from a couple of my current favorite cds - quiero club and balkan beat box. she found a good video for the johnny cash song:

this was also the first show where i played some songs directly from my laptop by plugging it into our universal input console. that was nice except that i accidentally had itunes set to overlap the songs, which i didn't want on the radio. and kathleen was texting with her family all through the show, so between the laptop and the texting, it was a very high-tech show :-)

started out with air's 10th anniversary moon safari again, so i thought i'd play several more electronic songs from the 1997-1999 span. also nacional now has a free cd sampler available through amazon. so i played music from that and gave away a few more of their itunes download cards.

and if you're going to download the free nacional sampler from amazon, you might as well download the free philip glass sampler too. i also played from that.

and i played some gogol bordello and two other bands started by members of gogol bordello. saw gogol bordello in lawrence last month, it was great. no videos for the songs i played today, but this is their most famous one and a great one, and i've apparently never posted it.

kathleen and josh and i went to see har mar superstar last night and also met up with mike mcgrath there, who had won tickets on my show. har mar was apparently very sick with the flu but still did a great show in a small place, the brick. he stripped off a shirt just about every song (about 6 of them) until he was shirtless. then for the last song or two took off his pants and performed in his paul frank briefs with silver shoes on. very hilarious. check out the pictures on the pitch concert review.

so i played one of the few clean har mar songs from the album today, "sunshine". i don't find a video for that one, but here is a song he played last night that is a great example of his good music and hilarious dancing.

did not end up going to see moby's midnight dj set last week. decided i would save my limited late-night DJ viewing power for Tiesto in a couple weeks.

i played the october euro hit 40 today. it had several songs that were performed at the ALMA (american latino media awards) awards in september, which i just happened to catch when flipping through channels. one that was performed at the ALMA's that wasn't featured on euro hit 40 was pitbull's "i know you want me". it's a decent song, not great, so i couldn't decide whether or not to play it to complete the theme. i decided to play it and got a call saying that song was already overplayed all over corporate radio right now :-) oh well. that was kinda funny. also had mike murphy at the station take a picture of me with the euro hit 40 case so that maybe they will send me some t-shirts to give away.

i was out of town last week and it was pledge drive time, so i pre-recorded my pledge drive show. i found out today that i only got one pledge, so that was depressing. but at least it was a good one for a guest dj spot. not sure if the pre-recording had anything to do with it, but it couldn't have helped. the whole fund drive total was quite low and i guess other people had bad results similar to mine. so hopefully for me it was just a reflection of the economy.

this week i played some new music from a new artist, scott hardkiss. one of his great songs is "the underwater ball", so then i played a few other ocean/sea related songs, including the f.u.n. song by spongebob and plankton :-) also some classic rock covers and a little classic rock. and played some moby since he will be doing a dj set in kansas city tomorrow night at the beaumont. kathleen and i are not happy that it starts at 11:30 pm, but we will try to suck it up and go. josh is going too. could be fun. video i played was body rock, which is a hilarious video

i started the show today with the EuroHit 40. this is a countdown of the top 40 hits in europe that is put together once a month by radio nederlands. they don't play each song in full, they pick select songs to play in one hour and just list the others. the show reminds me of when i was a kid and used to plan every sunday to listen to casey casem's top 40 countdown and i kept a log book of the top 10 each week (i guess i started as a music geek very early on). i would get so annoyed that i had to listen to the terrible song "sailing" by christopher cross each week when it was near and at number one for so long. and speaking of terrible songs, i usually don't play the whole hour of euro hit 40 because it can be packed with terrible songs from the united states. but this month had only one terrible song (pussycat dolls) and lots of really good ones, so i played the full hour. you can listen to the EuroHit 40 shows and/or download them for free at their web site: http://www.rnw.nl/radio-program-list/2497

one of the most interesting things i played today was electronic music fused with tuvan (mongolia/russia area) throat singing. the tuvan band is called huun huur tu and the cd is produced by an electronic music producer. here's a video of them without the electronic part. they can sing these deep notes and make these bizarre whistling/humming sounds with their throats at the same time. not to mention playing instruments too.

my brother got the daft punk "alive 2007" cd for christmas in 2007 and i can't believe i never really listened to it until recently. i watched the videos of their tour, and they're awesome! but the videos make me sorely regret not travelling to see them at my home town venue - red rocks in colorado. two "robots" playing awesome music from the top of a pyramid that shoots lights and fog, outside at red rocks. what could be possibly be better?!?!?!?

so i started my show with 13 minutes from that cd, then played some electro from iceland and norway, and the usual latin stuff. it was my 3rd week playing bomba estereo's "fuego" and i accidentally cued the wrong track and had to fade out and switch tracks. so i think that was a sign that i'm done with that one.

i did my space themed show today. i've done it about once each year, with many of the same songs and many different ones each time. one fun twist today is that i interviewed margie kay with the mutual ufo network (mufon). she is organizing a ufo conference in kansas city this weekend. she talked about the recent increase of sightings in the kansas city area. it was similar to this tv interview she did. (but of course the stupid tv news shows won't cover any story for over two minutes, but we were able to talk for 15 minutes)

another highlight was playing from a 1977 record my brother had called "the story of star wars". it's excerpts of the movie narrated and put onto one hour's worth of vinyl. i played the first 5 minutes or so which covered princess leia giving r2-d2 the plans and then the droids escaping in the escape pod. followed by the imperial march.
