every week that i go in to do my show, i walk by the bank entrance and say hi to the security guard. today he decided to come up and visit me in the studio during my show, so that was kinda fun. turns out his name is brian and he likes electronic music and smooth jazz. he used to live in berlin and we talked about how popular electronic music is in germany and he said there were so many dance clubs there you couldn't even get to all of them if you tried.
then after the show, a new volunteer came in named jabulani and asked for a tour. so i showed him around and it turns out we both moved here from california in the last few years.
and talked to mike murphy for a while too, so a pretty active day at the studio people-wise. music-wise i did a lot of the same artists and cds as last week. but i did sneak in captain sky's "sir jam a lot" on vinyl.

a couple fun things today. 1) euro hit 40, 2) i recently got a cd from norman cook aka fatboy slim where he compiled several tracks that he sampled/remixed for his own songs. besides just being interesting, there are some good tracks on there. the two he used for rockafeller skank are some good old surf songs. so i played the originals followed by his version. plan to do the same next week. he is one of my very favorite electronic artists, so maybe i'll keep up the tribute for a few weeks.

continued with the new chemical brothers cd and some ninja tune artists this week. i started the show with the first two tracks on the chemical brothers cd which are 18 minutes combined. so that was about 1/6 of the show :-) one of the ninja tune songs i played was a mr. scruff song that i was surprised to find a couple weeks ago as a sample song on my new computer. turns out his song "kalimba" is included free with windows 7, or at least some versions. here is the video, in classic mr. scruff animation.
also was planning to play the song "dad life". My friend Jack Rambat yesterday sent a link to the video, which was very funny. they had a free download of the mp3, so i put it on my mp3 player, but it failed to play. i guess that's what i get for trying to use my digital voice recorder as my mp3 player.

(world cup side note: usa win vs. algeria yesterday was awesome, so glad kathleen and i decided to watch it. fifa.com has highlight videos without commentary, but they can't be embedded.) then i went on to some other mix cds, some reggae/dub, and then some new releases.
i went to streetside records this weekend. i didn't realize that they had a good separate electronic section with lots of used stuff. so i had a mini-spree. i bought 5 or 6 used things, not like the dozens i used to come away with from amoeba records in california. but that's fine, it was a good selection, and i got some good stuff that i'll be playing the next few weeks. including one i played today: frequent flyer - kingston jamaica

three things during the show today that were exciting, for me at least. first, got to play from the new devo album just released this week. i've always been a big devo fan and all the devo song study videos, including their new "reality" series, have been pretty hilarious. the new album cover is pretty funny too.
second, this month's euro hit 40 gave a shout out to me and KKFI Kansas City community radio, all the way from the netherlands! that was fun to hear and a couple of listeners who are euro hit 40 fans called in to say they enjoyed it. thanks a lot to tim and the euro hit 40 crew!
and third, david sugalski aka the polish ambassador aka ample mammal sent me some of his new music this week, so i was able to play that too.
the new chemical brothers comes out next tuesday. i've been announcing for weeks that it came out the same day as the devo album, but i was wrong. unfortunately, it isn't the first time i've given out incorrect information on the air, and it probably won't be the last. so hopefully i'll be playing the new chemical brothers next week.

this week's pledge drive went better than last week's, so that's good news. the drive ends this weekend, but i don't have to pitch again, thank goodness. thanks to easom, matt, matthew, jim, mike, and anna for pledging! and to mike murphy for pitching with me.

i went in at 7am to help bill o' connor pitch and then he stayed to help me pitch for an hour of my show. unfortunately i still didn't get many pledges though. hopefully next week will be better, that's how it went last pledge drive.
i played a few blocks of music from different regions. first it was 2 groups from norway, then a few with eastern indian sounds in them, then later some latin. also some moog keyboard songs to note bob moog's birthday, and i also played some of the electronic singles that i bought for last week's show. one of them was "earth vs the world" from the polish ambassador:

i listened to music on pandora.com quite a bit in 2006/2007, but then i got out of the habit. i turned it on again today, and was reminded how good it can be. they have this algorithm called the "music genome project" that helps pick songs you'll like based on artists and songs that you've said you like. and it tends to do a great job. they've added advertisement breaks now, but you can't blame them, they have to make money somehow.
you can build multiple "stations" based on different kinds of music that you like and lets you share your stations with others. some of mine have turned out better than others, but i'm quite happy with my electronic station. if you've used it before, then you've probably already created one or more stations that you like. but either way, try mine out if you like electronic music like daft punk, groove armada, etc. and leave a comment with a link to your station if you have one you like.

devo has a new album coming out june 15th, which i'm pretty excited about. they've been sarcastically marketing it as a product from "devo inc." that has been developed via focus groups. they had an online flash application called the "devo song study" that let users pick their favorites from a list of new songs, and the ones that got the most votes made it on the new album. here's a video of one of their pretend focus groups:

kathleen and i went to the rodrigo y gabriela show on tuesday. it was excellent! i was sure to buy tickets soon after they went on sale, and got the best available seats. i knew they were really good seats, but didn't realize they were in the front row! then i was worried we were too close because rodrigo y gabriela often play sitting down and the monitors were right above us. but turns out they stood up most of the time and the seats were great. here's a couple pics:

on sunday, my friend josh and i went to see the producer/dj "pretty lights" at liberty hall in lawrence. it was awesome. great music, great light show, great venue. he uses the cool music distribution model of allowing all his music to be downloaded from his site for free/donation. here's a video of him performing in st. louis. its one of the songs i played today. he had a live drummer in lawrence too, but the lights were way better at liberty hall than in the tent in this video.

last week, i was able to record a phone interview with tjinder singh of cornershop. cornershop is one of my favorite bands, so i was pretty excited about the interview. we talked about their new album that was released in the united states this week, about the music industry, about the variety of instruments used in the band, and more. i've posted the interview in 3 parts: part1 part2 part3. i didn't play "the rolloff characteristics" today, but its the only video from the new album that i haven't posted yet, and its a great song, so here it is!
