two things I was excited about in this weeks show. first was that i got a cd from local electronic artist "fly". this is really the only local electronic music that i've received at the station in almost 4 years there. and it was really good. so i started the show with that. and i also got to play "i seen beyonce at burger king" which i just heard for the first time on tuesday. its been stuck in my head ever since. so this is a warning, i am not responsible if you watch this and end up with the refrain stuck in your head over and over and over and over....
after the show, went to lunch with mike murphy, then spent 3 hours at the station trying to help get their VOIP phone system working. its never quite worked right, but we may have narrowed it down to one computer interfering with the network.
headed to starlight theater now with kathleen to see "the producers" so more music ahead for us tonight!

i bought the latest cd from swedish artist robyn this week. she's been in the eurohit 40 lately and i liked her songs and have heard of her before. she collaborated with a group i really like, royksopp from norway. so the cd is good, what i've listened to so far. she started her own record label, i always like to hear about artists doing that. its called "konichiwa". and she has a related song and video that are quite hilarious. the song is not quite suitable for the radio, but i'm glad i can at least link to the video here.
so she was part of my tribute to euro hit 40 female artists, which included the new kylie minogue again. also continued with the fatboy slim thing, and started the show with indian-electro.

august euro hit 40 today and it was a good one. it had a song from kylie minogue's new album, and i played two additional songs from it. continued with the fatboy slim songs vs. the sources songs he sampled from. and finished with a remix of seven nation army. of course the original seven nation army is awesome enough on its own.
but the remix is good too.
so i think i had a lot of good music today. too bad i had several operator errors. didn't have the volume for the computer system up when i tried to play a promo from it, so i had several seconds of dead air while trying to recue it. and i gave out the wrong titles for two songs, and one album, but did at least realize it later so i could correct myself. just one of those days.

every week that i go in to do my show, i walk by the bank entrance and say hi to the security guard. today he decided to come up and visit me in the studio during my show, so that was kinda fun. turns out his name is brian and he likes electronic music and smooth jazz. he used to live in berlin and we talked about how popular electronic music is in germany and he said there were so many dance clubs there you couldn't even get to all of them if you tried.
then after the show, a new volunteer came in named jabulani and asked for a tour. so i showed him around and it turns out we both moved here from california in the last few years.
and talked to mike murphy for a while too, so a pretty active day at the studio people-wise. music-wise i did a lot of the same artists and cds as last week. but i did sneak in captain sky's "sir jam a lot" on vinyl.

a couple fun things today. 1) euro hit 40, 2) i recently got a cd from norman cook aka fatboy slim where he compiled several tracks that he sampled/remixed for his own songs. besides just being interesting, there are some good tracks on there. the two he used for rockafeller skank are some good old surf songs. so i played the originals followed by his version. plan to do the same next week. he is one of my very favorite electronic artists, so maybe i'll keep up the tribute for a few weeks.

continued with the new chemical brothers cd and some ninja tune artists this week. i started the show with the first two tracks on the chemical brothers cd which are 18 minutes combined. so that was about 1/6 of the show :-) one of the ninja tune songs i played was a mr. scruff song that i was surprised to find a couple weeks ago as a sample song on my new computer. turns out his song "kalimba" is included free with windows 7, or at least some versions. here is the video, in classic mr. scruff animation.
also was planning to play the song "dad life". My friend Jack Rambat yesterday sent a link to the video, which was very funny. they had a free download of the mp3, so i put it on my mp3 player, but it failed to play. i guess that's what i get for trying to use my digital voice recorder as my mp3 player.

got a couple ninja tune artists in today, two more tracks from the new chemical brothers, and some thievery corporation and other reggae. also pulled out the fantastic plastic machine. found this video for the song i played, "you must learn all night long". not sure if its official or not, but its pretty good either way.
looked for an official video for lovesick. didn't find one but found that it was used in a cadillac commercial. coincidentally, i've heard commercials use songs from both chemical brothers (budweiser - galvanize) and fantastic plastic machine (some car, maybe also cadillac? - theme of luxury)

started the show with a short world cup tribute. some south african music and one song, "intro" on fabric live 07, that is actually old soccer audio commentary set to music. (world cup side note: usa win vs. algeria yesterday was awesome, so glad kathleen and i decided to watch it. fifa.com has highlight videos without commentary, but they can't be embedded.) then i went on to some other mix cds, some reggae/dub, and then some new releases.
i went to streetside records this weekend. i didn't realize that they had a good separate electronic section with lots of used stuff. so i had a mini-spree. i bought 5 or 6 used things, not like the dozens i used to come away with from amoeba records in california. but that's fine, it was a good selection, and i got some good stuff that i'll be playing the next few weeks. including one i played today: frequent flyer - kingston jamaica

three things during the show today that were exciting, for me at least. first, got to play from the new devo album just released this week. i've always been a big devo fan and all the devo song study videos, including their new "reality" series, have been pretty hilarious. the new album cover is pretty funny too.
second, this month's euro hit 40 gave a shout out to me and KKFI Kansas City community radio, all the way from the netherlands! that was fun to hear and a couple of listeners who are euro hit 40 fans called in to say they enjoyed it. thanks a lot to tim and the euro hit 40 crew!
and third, david sugalski aka the polish ambassador aka ample mammal sent me some of his new music this week, so i was able to play that too.
the new chemical brothers comes out next tuesday. i've been announcing for weeks that it came out the same day as the devo album, but i was wrong. unfortunately, it isn't the first time i've given out incorrect information on the air, and it probably won't be the last. so hopefully i'll be playing the new chemical brothers next week.

i went in at 7am to help bill o' connor pitch and then he stayed to help me pitch for an hour of my show. unfortunately i still didn't get many pledges though. hopefully next week will be better, that's how it went last pledge drive.
i played a few blocks of music from different regions. first it was 2 groups from norway, then a few with eastern indian sounds in them, then later some latin. also some moog keyboard songs to note bob moog's birthday, and i also played some of the electronic singles that i bought for last week's show. one of them was "earth vs the world" from the polish ambassador:

i found that one of the songs on my new pretty lights album uses the same hook as rappin' 4-tay's "playaz club" and nightmares on wax's "you wish". so i wanted to play all 3 songs back-to-back to start the show, but i couldn't find a clean version of "playaz club" to download. so i left that one out, but i get to include it here with the video!
