i got a great new indian hip-hop cd last week by "mc yogi". most all of his songs revolve around the hindu god ganesh, who is an elephant. so the cd is called "elephant power". its both amusing and good music. one song is called "ganesh is fresh", LOL

also had damon alburn's new project: monkey. some fabric live stuff, and a euro hit 40 that included madonna's new song, "give it 2 me", co-produced by Pharell. I love it! I'd say the video is not one of her better ones, pretty boring by her standards. But here it is:

started my show today with 30 minutes of tracks that i learned of through EuroHit 40, the radio netherlands countdown show. a few of the tracks are electronic kids songs, including one from the crazy kids show called Lazytown. then there's the holly dolly song. i got two calls from people who loved the holly dolly song, and i had one the last time i played it too, so it may be the most well liked song i've ever played on my show, which is hilarious because its so bizarre. i can't help but like it too. and the video is plenty bizarre as well. the singer is supposed to be a donkey, and who knows what that other creature is who is trying to kill the other creatures, LOL. so here it is:

i got a great new cd from the station. the band is called funkadesi and they fuse reggae and Indian music. they're from chicago, so their promo material has a quote/review from barack obama, lol. barack says "funkadesi really knows how to get a crowd going. I can't say enough about how energizing this band is. there's a lot of funk in that desi"

so after that i played some other indian music, and then some more run dmc (king of rock) since that went over well last week. then some ska, neil diamond, and some electronic.

i watched a bunch of ali g videos online this week. him talking at harvard graduation is great. sasha baron cohen is so funny. so i decided to play some of his brother's band, zohar, today.

Just got back from a vacation in San Francisco with Kathleen. I bought about 45 used CD's at Amoeba, the best record store in the world. Most of them were $2 or $3. i'm trying to branch out a little into funk/soul, so i bought some james brown and a cool funk instrumental cd called black feeling. so i started off with that today.

while in SF, i visited andrew, the owner of the satamile and bot record labels. he showed me his sweet home studio and gave me some new stuff to play, so that was fun and put me at about 50 albums to take home. hopefully i'll listen to them all eventually.

kathleen and i went to english beat this past weekend at grinders. it was excellent. they now have a replacement for ranking roger. his name is "anthony first class". he was great! and grinders is a very nice outdoor venue and the weather was perfect. very good time. When i met angelo moore (of fishbone) at the warped tour last week, he was selling some of his solo cd's and a comic book with an accompanying cd that you play while you read it. i haven't done that yet, but today i played a song from one of the other cd's i bought from him. the song is pretty depressing, about getting screwed over by record companies. the song is called "showtime (famous, but not rich)". not sure if its necessarily autobiographical, but it wouldn't surprise me if it is.

Pinker Tones @ Vans Warped Tour

Went to the Vans Warped tour yesterday specifically just to see the Pinker Tones from Barcelona. We got a little bonus though in that Angelo Moore of Fishbone was hanging out backstage. He had performed earlier and then we watched him perform later. Here are our pics!

If you watch the Pinker Tones video of Sonida Total (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3_nuysoe9kY) you can see that in Europe they play for huge crowds and do a massive stage show. And I've really loved their new album. So it was just blowing my mind that I considered these guys big electronic rock stars that we're lucky are stopping in Kansas City, but then they're performing on the smallest stage at the tour (it wasn't even a stage, they just played on the asphalt under a tent) and there were literally about 5 other people there to see them besides my girlfriend and me. All of the young kids there seemed to be waiting for the next band. But the good news for us is it meant we got to be up close and talk to the guys and take photos with them afterwards. They were very nice. Again, we were fortunate to get a chance to see them, its just too bad that more people from Kansas City didn't show up.

And it was very hot there.

the pinker tones' publicist emailed me at 6:00 pm asking if I still wanted to phone interview them. i said it would either have to be in the next few hours or live. so he opted for live and said they would call me at 11:40 am. i've learned from many other dj's at our station that live call-in interviews with musicians often don't happen. sure enough, 11:40 passed and no call. but then!!!... the publicist called at 11:43 or so and said he could have them in 3 minutes and we could do a 5 minute interview or so. i said sure. no call. so no interview today, but we may try to pre-record one this week. i still might go to see them at the vans warped tour, but i will cheer slightly less loudly :-) j/k

Today I played half an hour of Latin electronic music, then half an hour of Asian-ish electronic, then just electronic, ending with German electronic. I'm still not tired of the Moby CD, or kylie minogue, or the stuff from nacional, so there was some of all that.

Today is the birthday of former president JFK. so i played about 25 minutes of some speeches of his off of a record i have.

i also got a LOT of great music this week from nacional records, an alternative latin label. now one of my new favorite bands is the pinker tones from barcelona. i didn't play this particular song today, but here's a video of them performing live:

the great thing about this is that they spend about half their time dancing. its often unclear what, if anything, electronic musicians are doing when they perform. so i'm glad these guys keep the knob turning to a minimum and just dance. much more fun to watch. they're performing in the vans warped tour but i'm not sure i want to go to that big show when i only really want to see them. we'll see

happy may day! I got to start the show by playing from the new flight of the conchords cd. then my friend Jim "the blind guy" called in to tell me it was also the "national day of prayer". kinda funny that may day - a celebration of the working class, which some might view as a leftist/communist holiday - was on the same day as prayer day, which could be considered a fundementalist Christian event. Jim said he told the Christians holding a prayer day event that he was bringing some buddhists and some transsexuals to pray with them. Then they announced they relocated their event indoors, LOL. the funny thing about today's show was not the show itself, but that during the show, the host of the next show asked me to be her guest on that show. her planned guest had cancelled. so with only an hour notice, i ended up on the show at noon talking about gun control, LOL. We hit our pledge drive's goal of $100,000 yesterday! so we ended our pledge drive just in time for me to not have to do another pledge drive show.

kathleen and i went to two concerts this week. Last Thursday it was The Wilders opening up for Chicago Afro Beat Project. But most of the crowd was there to see the Wilders, and they stole the show. they were good! And last night we saw reggae. locals Jah Roots, then Mikey General and Luciano. I liked all of them! though i was a little overdosed on reggae by the end.

The station encouraged us to make our fund drive show a "special" show, so I did a space/sci-fi theme. I did a non-fund drive show with that theme last year, but I changed many of the songs. And I played a 2 minute interview with Arthur C. Clarke from Pacifica.

I'd say it didn't help attract funds though. I raised about $800, but about half of that came from me, my girlfriend, and other KKFI programmers. Last time I did better, but I also had sent out emails to people, and I had premiums. so I guess I'll do those again next time.

I did some CD looping (of start of robot parade) and some mixing (of sound effects on CD and "up to jupiter" on vinyl) today, so that was fun.

Wow, I've been so busy this week I didn't even remeber to do my blog entry here until 3 days later. and now i have too much to do to find a video. But one item of note this week is that Arthur C. Clarke just died. He was my favorite science fiction author. so i started the day by reading an article about him (while the 1st song was playing in background) and then playing the classic classical piece from 2001 Space Odyssey, which was on a Fabric mix.

I interviewed Justin van Pelt today on my show. He plays Hedwig in the local production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Kathleen and I saw it on Friday night and it was great! justin did an excellent job at what must be a very difficult part to play. The live show is SO much better than the movie. But here's a good video from the movie version, of when the band is playing one of their miserable gigs in a restaurant.

I had lots of good new (to me) music to play today. I just got Digitalism last night and it sounds excellent. I got this electro-belly dance CD called Bodyshock while I was on vacation in Puerto Rico, and its great. But maybe my favorite today was Mr. Pacman, a bitpop band from Denver. Thats BITpop as in 8-bit Nintendo-style music. Here's a video:

dj shadow, cut chemist, and kid koala show was really good. my girlfriend and i had more fun watching kid koala, who was the opener, then the other guys. they were good too and played a good mix of music, but kid koala was such an excellent scratcher, and he was energetic and funny. and the cameras were on his hands the whole time so it was great to get close ups of what he was doing. he stole the show! (imho)

so i started off with a new track of his. and then i played several songs that the other two played in their set. they played a mashup from the 70's called "stairway to gilligan's island". maybe i'll get that and play it in two weeks. but this coming week i'll be in puerto rico!!!

This coming Monday is Martin Luther King Jr. day. Rather than play excerpts of his speeches (which I considered), I decided that for the first hour of today's show I would play music that I thought the Reverend would approve of. Songs about racism, about standing up for your rights, about love and unity. Including this classic song with a classic video.....Fight the Power. What a great video. Flavor Flav and Chuck D are awesome, and so are their soldier backup dancers, and all the high-top fade haircuts in the crowd.

One of the things we got for Christmas at our house is Guitar Hero III. Last week I played a song from it: Paint it Black. This week I played another: Metallica's One. But the version I played of One was by Rodrigo y Gabriela. And I also played a lullaby version of Enter Sandman.

I got a call from a listener (Tom) who says that he has a box load of records, tapes, and CD's from India that he's going to donate to the station for me. Yes! I hate tapes though. I got rid of all mine 3 years ago. But as my grandpa used to say ALL the time, "Beggars can't be choosers".

The best part of the shows in December is being able to play from my El Vez "sno-way Jose" Christmas CD. El Vez is a genius. Here's the non-Christmas version of "En El Barrio"

The Christmas version seamlessly mixes in Silent Night *AND* Champagne Supernova by Oasis. Seriously. Genius.

I also did my first (I think?) live editing out of illegal language today. It was during "The message" by grandmaster flash and the furious five. I had to mute it for a few seconds to edit out "pissing" and "fag-hag", which might not have been violations anyway, but I figured it wasn't worth taking a chance.
