play list - 06/25/2009

just heard that michael jackson died. i was a big fan in the late 80's when "BAD" was released. that's also when the moonwalker "movie" was released that had the ultra-long version of smooth criminal, had the video for bad performed by kids, and had ladysmith black mambazo singing at the end. smooth criminal is probably still my favorite song of his. AND that video even was the basis for a smooth criminal video game! (which i loved). i think i'll try to play that song on the show next week.

as for this week, started off with some latin lounge, then some latin electronic (love the zzk sound ablum), then some general electronic stuff. but the song that's been in my head the last week is mentiras by los amigos invisibles. prety cool low-tech video too:

i'm enjoying my new yelle cd, but i was running some lyrics translations last night for her french lyrics and was shocked to find that most of her songs are pretty sexual. at least one definitely was not playable, and several were questionable. so i decided to just stick to "a cause de garcons". also got a cool cd of latin cumbia remixes from nacional and some afro-peruvian remixes from cumbancha. so lots of new music today, plus a little funk at the end.

also slipped in some more lady sovereign, the rapper from the UK. that cd also has some language issues, but "hoodie" was clean:

play list - 06/11/2009

last week i heard about the french electro-pop artist yelle a couple times, watched a video and really liked it, got the cd, and played it this morning. the song is called "a cause de garcons", which i read means "because of boys". here's the video, pretty funny:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tmLjZrH0VlY

played a few more french electronic songs after that. one of them was daft punk's phoenix. funny thing happened when i was playing that one, someone called in to tell me that my cd was skipping, but it wasn't :-) it is a pretty repetitive song, to be honest. but still good.

also continued my streak of playing from my new amadou & miriam cd and the new nickodemus cd.

play list - 06/04/2009 - Judaism

rabbi scott white and susan choucroun came in today during the second hour to talk about judaism. rabbi scott brought his guitar and played several songs during that time, some in english and some in hebrew. coincidentally, president obama was in egypt today giving a speech on the middle-east conflict. so rabbi scott ended the hour mentioning that and playing a song about peace, called shalom. that was good.

as an introduction to the interview, i started the show with two songs by french-israeli artist yael naim. then played african, afro-funk, and some nickodemus and thievery corporation.

went to see they might be giants do their "flood" concert last week. it was awesome. i don't think i've ever seen so many fans singing the words to every song.

play list - 05/21/2009

took a break from the religion interviews this week, so i played 2 full hours of music for the first time in a couple months. started with some christian hip-hop though, courtesy of krs-one. then played more hip-hop including lady sovereign, whose cd i just got recently and really like. i also made sure to get some chromeo in just so i had an excuse to post a video from their appearance on yo gabba gabba! "Pete, did you wash your hands before touching these keyboards?", "Yes", "Did you????", "No :-("

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rDG0c3saE4I

also, they might be giants are in town tomorrow doing a special "flood" show so i played a couple tracks form that cd. too bad i didn't put more effort into getting free tickets to give away this year like i did last year. just didn't get around to it, sorry everyone. but i bought our tickets today, should be a great show!

05/14/2009 - play list - roman catholicism

interviewed Robert Bacic about roman catholicism today. i tried to focus more on things specific to the catholic church than on christianity in general. so we talked about priests, bishops, popes, the sacraments, saints, and more.

before that i played some euro hit 40, a funny song about karate kid 2, and more from staff bend bilili, which is a group of paraplegic musicians from the democratic republic of the congo that play homemade/handmade instruments.

play list - 05/07/2009 - Hinduism

Kris Krishna joined me on the show today to talk about Hinduism. i found it very interesting that he pointed out that Christianity is very similar to Judaism because Christ was originally Jewish, and Buddhism is very similar to Hinduism because Buddha was originally a Hindu. Next week's discussion will be on Roman Catholicism.

i was happy to play "music for a found harmonium" which I've had in my head many times and never knew what it was until recently. i think i knew it from napolean dynamite. here's a pretty sweet live version:

play list - 04/30/2009 - Spring Fund Drive

thursday's fund drive show did not go too well for me. i'm pretty sure i raised the least amount of money that i've rasied on my show during a fund drive in the last 3 years. not sure if its the economy, or not enough listeners, or some other unlucky circumstances. pretty discouraging though. hopefully others at the station are doing better on their shows. thanks very much to those of you who did call in to donate though, i appreciate it!

the better part of the day was that right after my show my girlfriend and i drove 4 hours to saint louis to see flight of the conchords in concert. they were excellent. started off the show coming out in their robot costumes and preformed "too many dicks on the dance floor". had some great light effects too. and the theater that it was in, the fox, was incredible with the old detailed architecture and decorations. they went on to play just about all the songs from their albums, plus a few others, and some from season two. and finished off with a great synchronized dance rendition of "sugar lumps". awesome and hilarious show. then the next day we went to forest park, the bascilica cathedral, and the arch.

started off the show with an edited version of beck's "time bomb". i'd had that song stuck in my head due to the following hilarious video, the hollywood high five montage.

play list - 04/16/2009 - Islam

today's religion interview was islam with Rauf Mir. we talked about the koran, the five pillars of islam, islamic law, and even Greg Mortenson and his book "three cups of tea". he brought in several songs, but i didn't get the song names for this list. since islam is most prevalent in northern africa and the middle east (thank you wikipedia!) i started the show by playing music from that region. we were going to finish with some Cat Stevens (aka Yusaf Islam after he converted to islam), but that track on the cd didn't work. so here's a video of my favorite Cat Stevens songs from one of my favorite movies, rushmore:

play list - 04/09/2009 - Sufism

this week's world faith interview was on sufism with allaudin "dean" ottinger. he leads a sufi center in kc and also happens to be a member of the local band, bcr. so he had a couple friends join him and they played a few live songs using guitar, clarinet, and hand drums. we also played several tracks from cd that dean brought in.

today was also the start of "the big read", where half-hour of my program was used to play a part of a reading of a book. so i only played half hour of my own music today. the big read lasts 3 weeks, and i am continuing the interviews, so looks like i'll play only half hour of my own music for next couple weeks too. but i'm not complaining, i'm enjoying the interviews quite a bit.

was happy to acquire the ulrich schnauss remix of "breathe me", so i started with that. here's a video for the remix, i don't think it is official, but looks pretty good

play list 04/02/2009 - Baha'i

Two fun events today. First, I was able to give away tickets to an upcoming concert for Nacional Records artists Aterciopelados, from Columbia. Then in the second hour I interviewed Barb McAtte, the representative of the Baha'i faith on the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council. We played several songs that she brought in.

Since the monks are still in town, I opened the show talking a bit about them and about the Beastie Boys support for Tibet. Here's a video from their Tibetan Freedom Concerts with some sweet break dancing clips:

play list - 03/26/2009 - Tibetan Monks Visit from India

Really fun show today. As the second installment of my religions of the world series, I was very fortunate to have on my show today the Tibetan monks visiting Kansas City from the Drepung Gomang monastery in India. They are here for about 3 weeks, doing various events around town, hosted by the Rime Buddhist Center. They had a translator with them who spoke very good English. We talked for an hour about their visit, about Buddhism, and about the oppression of the Tibetan people by the Chinese government. These monks, like many Tibetans, fled Tibet and are living as refugees in India. The monks also performed two chants that sounded excellent.

So as a lead up to the interview I played all Indian music.

I didn't find any good official videos that i haven't posted before, so here is a one-frame video of zoo york, the first song i played. i love this song.

play list 03/05/2009 - American Indian Spirituality

today was the first of a series of shows i'm doing where i'm inviting different representatives from the Greater Kansas City Interfaith Council on to talk about their religion. i'm also hoping to fit music in whenever possible. so today was a good start, i had kara hawkins and stumbling deer on to talk about american indian spirituality. they also are musicians so they performed two improvisational songs using flute, rattle, drum, and vocals. i thought it went really well, i hope all the shows go this well. not sure who i'm having on next week, if anyone, but in three weeks i will have some tibetan buddhist monks on to chant and the week after that the representative of the bahai faith.

started the show off playing the two oscar nominated songs from slumdog millionaire, and some more electronic jazz, including mr. scruff. i didn't play this particular mr. scruff song, but its one of my favorites and i have played it many times:

play list - 02/19/2009

some station engineers had to do some maintenance work on the transmitter during my show today, so i was only on-air until about 11:15. but we were still streaming on the internet and we never know for sure when we'll be back on-air, so we just keep the show rolling. i may replay some of the off-air songs next week, i hope the web listeners don't mind a few repeats.

mainly i was playing jazz remixes the second hour because i just got a promo for a cd of nat king cole remixes. but i also got some electronic dance and reggae and soca and african in too. soca in honor of upcoming carnaval! played a maximus dan song that i didn't find a good video of, but here is a different one, about soccer even!:

play list - 02/12/2009

i didn't realize that today was lincoln's AND darwin's birthday until "blind guy" called in to let me know. so i learned that, and also i was playing some canadian artists (feist and lhasa and fusion body) and didn't realize that chromeo was canadian until i saw on the feist cd that chromeo remixed one of her tracks, then looked it up and they are from montreal. so i learned a lot today. i played the chromeo remix and so i got in a total of 4 canadian artists. also some ska and reggae and some funk and disco.

for disco, i didn't play this particular song from saturday night fever, but maybe i should have. this is maybe the best movie dance scene ever?!?!?

play list - 02/05/2009 - mini fund drive

We had a mini fund drive this week. so i helped pitch through the news shows from 8:30 to 10:00 and then two more hours for my show. i had others sitting in with me much of the time so that makes it more enjoyable. its still a bit stressful and i was getting discouraged about half way through. but some good donations came in later and my show ended up raising a decent amount, so i wasn't totally depressed at the end.

i got in some good electronic stuff, a few funk tracks, and a couple more soca. for the funk, i played a song from ocean's 12 called "l.s.d. partie". i didn't realize until looking on youtube just now that the song was actually from 1969. it was apparently used in the soundtrack for a french movie from around then that looks pretty interesting

play list - 01/29/2009

played a few from nickodemus's CD "endangered species" today, and a couple reggae and soca tunes, and more from a.r. rahman. also did a few jazzy songs, including jamiroquai's "virtual insanity". i never really thought of that as jazz but wikipedia described it as acid jazz, and it was on a cd i have called "nu jazz cool", so whatever. I always liked it, and the video is a TRIP!:
