the pinker tones' publicist emailed me at 6:00 pm asking if I still wanted to phone interview them. i said it would either have to be in the next few hours or live. so he opted for live and said they would call me at 11:40 am. i've learned from many other dj's at our station that live call-in interviews with musicians often don't happen. sure enough, 11:40 passed and no call. but then!!!... the publicist called at 11:43 or so and said he could have them in 3 minutes and we could do a 5 minute interview or so. i said sure. no call. so no interview today, but we may try to pre-record one this week. i still might go to see them at the vans warped tour, but i will cheer slightly less loudly :-) j/k

Today I played half an hour of Latin electronic music, then half an hour of Asian-ish electronic, then just electronic, ending with German electronic. I'm still not tired of the Moby CD, or kylie minogue, or the stuff from nacional, so there was some of all that.

I mentioned the moby video on the air for 'i love to move in here'. it has this pretty funny creature and a good ending.

Today is the birthday of former president JFK. so i played about 25 minutes of some speeches of his off of a record i have.

i also got a LOT of great music this week from nacional records, an alternative latin label. now one of my new favorite bands is the pinker tones from barcelona. i didn't play this particular song today, but here's a video of them performing live:

the great thing about this is that they spend about half their time dancing. its often unclear what, if anything, electronic musicians are doing when they perform. so i'm glad these guys keep the knob turning to a minimum and just dance. much more fun to watch. they're performing in the vans warped tour but i'm not sure i want to go to that big show when i only really want to see them. we'll see

happy may day! I got to start the show by playing from the new flight of the conchords cd. then my friend Jim "the blind guy" called in to tell me it was also the "national day of prayer". kinda funny that may day - a celebration of the working class, which some might view as a leftist/communist holiday - was on the same day as prayer day, which could be considered a fundementalist Christian event. Jim said he told the Christians holding a prayer day event that he was bringing some buddhists and some transsexuals to pray with them. Then they announced they relocated their event indoors, LOL. They claim it was because of weather forecasts, maybe it was, maybe it wasn't.

the funny thing about today's show was not the show itself, but that during the show, the host of the next show asked me to be her guest on that show. her planned guest had cancelled. so with only an hour notice, i ended up on the show at noon talking about gun control, LOL. We hit our pledge drive's goal of $100,000 yesterday! so we ended our pledge drive just in time for me to not have to do another pledge drive show.

kathleen and i went to two concerts this week. Last Thursday it was The Wilders opening up for Chicago Afro Beat Project. But most of the crowd was there to see the Wilders, and they stole the show. they were good! And last night we saw reggae. locals Jah Roots, then Mikey General and Luciano. I liked all of them! though i was a little overdosed on reggae by the end.

The station encouraged us to make our fund drive show a "special" show, so I did a space/sci-fi theme. I did a non-fund drive show with that theme last year, but I changed many of the songs. And I played a 2 minute interview with Arthur C. Clarke from Pacifica.

I'd say it didn't help attract funds though. I raised about $800, but about half of that came from me, my girlfriend, and other KKFI programmers. Last time I did better, but I also had sent out emails to people, and I had premiums. so I guess I'll do those again next time.

I did some CD looping (of start of robot parade) and some mixing (of sound effects on CD and "up to jupiter" on vinyl) today, so that was fun.

Tomorrow night is a concert of local group BCR that has a theramin player. So I played some BCR and some theramin music today (Portishead, Cornelius). we were on an off the air because of transmitter problems :-(

Wow, I've been so busy this week I didn't even remeber to do my blog entry here until 3 days later. and now i have too much to do to find a video. But one item of note this week is that Arthur C. Clarke just died. He was my favorite science fiction author. so i started the day by reading an article about him (while the 1st song was playing in background) and then playing the classic classical piece from 2001 Space Odyssey, which was on a Fabric mix.

Play list - 03/13/2008 - Justin Van Pelt as Hedwig

I interviewed Justin van Pelt today on my show. He plays Hedwig in the local production of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. Kathleen and I saw it on Friday night and it was great! justin did an excellent job at what must be a very difficult part to play. The live show is SO much better than the movie. But here's a good video from the movie version, of when the band is playing one of their miserable gigs in a restaurant.

I had lots of good new (to me) music to play today. I just got Digitalism last night and it sounds excellent. I got this electro-belly dance CD called Bodyshock while I was on vacation in Puerto Rico, and its great. But maybe my favorite today was Mr. Pacman, a bitpop band from Denver. Thats BITpop as in 8-bit Nintendo-style music. Here's a video:

dj shadow, cut chemist, and kid koala show was really good. my girlfriend and i had more fun watching kid koala, who was the opener, then the other guys. they were good too and played a good mix of music, but kid koala was such an excellent scratcher, and he was energetic and funny. and the cameras were on his hands the whole time so it was great to get close ups of what he was doing. he stole the show! (imho)

so i started off with a new track of his. and then i played several songs that the other two played in their set. they played a mashup from the 70's called "stairway to gilligan's island". maybe i'll get that and play it in two weeks. but this coming week i'll be in puerto rico!!!

I gave away another 4 pairs of tickets today to the dj shadow, cut chemist, kid koala concert on Tuesday. I think I had more callers for this ticket giveaway than any other time I've given tickets away.
